Whitham Law Group is here to help you with legal child support in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Child support is a financial amount that goes from the noncustodial parent to a custodial parent. This payment helps and aids in the upbringing and well being of the child. In the State of Colorado, child support is legally required and is based on the principle that all legal parents/guardians are obligated to support their children. This rule is applied even to the parent who does not have legal or physical custody. Child support payment only ends when the child’s parental relationship is legally terminated or when the child becomes an adult.
An Income Shares Model is used to calculate child support payments. The Income Shares Model calculates the amount of money that would have been spent on the child if the marriage continued. Then splits the amount between the parents according to their incomes. Calculating child support payments is long and tedious. The Courts will calculate your adjusted gross income, which are vastly different factors than your adjusted taxable income.
The Courts will then apply you to a Basic Child Support Worksheet, and you will be required to pay the amount until your child is 18 and out of high school.
